Description
Founded by Dr Bailey Carrodus in 1969, Yarra Yering is one of the Yarra Valley’s most historic and influential estates. Dry Red No. 1 is the flagship Cabernet-dominant blend, drawn from the estate’s original 1960s plantings, and represents a benchmark for cool-climate Bordeaux varieties in Australia.
The 2019 vintage is composed of approximately two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Hand-sorted fruit was fermented in small half-tonne open fermenters, with selected parcels receiving extended skin contact to build structure and depth. Each variety was matured separately in French oak barriques, about 40% new, for fifteen months before blending and bottling under natural cork.
The resulting wine is finely structured and classically styled, showing cassis, black mulberry and bay leaf lifted by graphite and cedar. The palate is medium to full-bodied, combining ripe fruit with savoury detail, persistent fine tannins and bright acidity. A wine of depth and longevity, it will cellar gracefully for decades.
