Securing International Allocations via La Place

Securing International Allocations via La Place

Despite dramatic recent changes in the world wine order, Bordeaux still remains front and centre of the international wine trade with its immense volumes of fine wine as well as its place as a significant international trading hub. Local negociants hold vast quantities of aged stocks and supply customers with hard to source wines around the world. And the annual ‘En Primeur’ campaign brings the attention of the wine world to Bordeaux to judge the upcoming vintage.

The buying and selling of Bordeaux has long followed a fairly strict pattern between chateaus, courtiers and negociants. Chateaus set their ex-cellar price while the courtiers negotiate with negociants who then supply international trade buyers. This works very well for chateaus who can focus on wine production and outsource sales while relying on courtiers and negociants, of which there are more than 400, to focus on sales. This arrangement and the associated commercial network is commonly referred to as La Place de Bordeaux.

While Bordeaux will always be a focus, in recent years La Place de Bordeaux has spread its wings past the annual en primeur campaign for the latest vintage to various releases of both wines from Bordeaux and further afield since 1998, starting with the Rothschild Chilean project, Alamaviva, before widening to the likes of Masseto and Opus One. It has been a slow process but now the La Place marketplace offers international retailers easy access to a broad range of international icons such as Chteau d’Yquem, Chateau Latour, Borgogno Barolo and Solaia. The focus remains on iconic wines with the addition of Australia’s Giaconda Chardonnay, Jim Barry’s Armagh, Wynn’s John Riddoch and Yalumba’s Octavius Shiraz providing an increasing prestige for some Australian icons. The key advantage of La Place is it is a one-stop shop to source iconic cellaring wines. This year there is plenty to look forward to including:
